Ebook About Robert is a pet, a human pleasure slave, and well past his prime. So when teenage Duke Thomar of Aylian buys him via mail order, Robert first suspects a dreadful misunderstanding. The Pet and His Duke was recently recommended to me on the Goodreads Recommendations page. The synopsis sounded interesting so I downloaded the sample on Kindle. I was intrigued and hoping it was also available on Kindle Unlimited. It wasn't. And I wasn't sure I wanted to buy the book. So I tried to find a different book to read. But, I kept thinking about this one to the point I finally just bought it. And I read the entire thing in a day. I didn't realize it was part of a series. Though, I can definitely confirm it can be read alone. The Pet and His Duke was... something. It heavily suffers from the telling-not-showing syndrome. The plot was a little weird, random, and all over the place but it was like a car crash you can't look away from. I kept telling myself only one more chapter, until I finished the book. The story follows Robert, who is a forty year old 'pet', or a pleasure slave, who is too old to have much value to anyone anymore. We don't know, at least in this book, why these slaves exist. It's supposedly a future society where humans have conquered other planets and now live in a Dystopia with aliens and demons and portals to other dimensions. I never really understood the hierarchy. Robert is bought by a legit teenage Duke, Thomar, who apparently runs a planet? But then there's an Empress who is the only one more powerful than him, so I don't really know. Robert is confused why someone like Thomar bought him or what he wants from him. They develop feelings because of course they do. So, yay, for age gap romances if that's your thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The slave system never gets addressed or challenged or resolved. It just exists. The ending was lacklust. I didn't understand Robert's decision. Alain, the demon hound puppy, was the star character. The friendships that help Robert see his worth as a person and stand up for himself were also nice.I'm not sure if I'll pick up anymore of the books in the series anytime soon. Maybe if they become available on KU.Be aware that this book is a very graphic dub/con story. I really enjoyed this book ... the M/M trope was much different than usual. The story is told 3rd person but from the vantage point of one of the main M/Cs. The world building was interesting: the characters were also interesting. The reason for the removal of one star: the story is 90% told and 10% dialogue. I felt like I was being told a story: not shown the story. The dialogue, when there, was good: I'm not sure why the authors chose to present what I think was a marvelous story via telling: maybe because the book would have been several books if they chose to show. However, I found myself wishing and desiring a lot more dialogue: personally, I'd use this book as an outline and go back and write it again with lots of dialogue and a bit more expansion (especially for Thomar's secret which wasn't utilized enough, in my opinion). I think about the story as I really did like it a lot: just wish there was more to it!! I'd have purchased and read several books should they have chosen to 'talk' more: I really would have liked it a lot more, too. Towards the end, there's a bit more conversation but I wish the authors would have added more. A great and wonderful idea - very creative - just fell a bit flat. Unfortunately, I don't know that I'd purchase anything else in this 'universe' by these authors as I don't want to be told another story.
